Let me preface this article by affirming the fact that I truly believe the audio for this track would make an excellent OST for a crime drama. With that being said, I’d like to take the time to provide a music review for Stray Kids’ newest single, “Double Knot.” However, I don’t expect this article to persuade someone to listen to the single, but I love talking about music.
So, let’s indulge in my admiration.
In regards to the song itself, my initial impression was rather mixed. In comparison to the 3racha version of the original “Double Knot,” this new version is drastically different. But I mean that in the best of ways. After all, I could hardly anticipate a remixed version of the original with all nine members.
Nonetheless, this song isn’t meant to be some kind of radio-friendly pop hit. In fact, I rather like that it isn’t because that makes it stand out from the rest of the generic pop music I frequently hear on the radio these days. To start, the song has a really powerful melody courtesy of digitalized music production that provides its foundation. The rest of the track is built around stunning choreography, impressive rapping from Han and Changbin, and interesting lyrics.
As for the video itself? There is a lot to dissect here that I simply don’t have the time to discuss in one article. I could easily talk about the dropped teasers for the group’s upcoming album featuring singles like “Astronaut.” Or, I could discuss the recurring symbolism of the key that we know has heavy importance in Chan’s teaser trailer. I could also mention the choreography itself which left me feeling breathless from just watching on my iPhone.
Ultimately, the song is similar to the group’s previous hit “Side Effects” because it sets out to be different. It may appeal to some people and it might deter other listeners. Regardless of where you stand, it’s impossible to deny that Stray Kids are attempting to do something radically interesting with K-Pop music and I am ready for what comes next.
Also, it’s important to note that Stray Kids have also recently released some sort of guide video for “Double Knot?” I haven’t had the chance to watch, but I hope it makes a fun companion to the music video itself.
